Detours (Rock Slides, etc) in the news, concerning Gatlinburg, Tennessee
I-40 Rockslide

"The rockslide on I-40 three miles past the Tennessee and North Carolina border could have the interstate closed for at least 3 months. TDOT will update our website as information becomes available with important resources to make your travel in Tennessee safe. Here's the latest on the I-40 rockslide in North Carolina. Workers are blasting rock to remove the mountain slope and large boulders from the rockslide site. This will continue over the next several weeks. NCDOT geotechnical experts are on site inspecting the slope to help determine blasting points and inspecting the rock formation to see how much more material needs to be removed. Once material is removed, NCDOT officials hope to have a timeline for reopening I-40. Updates provided as soon as they become available."

US-64 in Tennessee Closed Due to Rockslide
Released on Tue, Nov 10, 2009 - 12:40 pm

"U.S. 64 in Polk County is closed at mile marker 17.6 due to a major rockslide near the Ocoee 2 Dam.

A portion of the mountainside slid into the roadway at approximately 6:00 a.m. ET this morning. Another slide occurred this afternoon at approximately 1:00 p.m. ET further complicating removal efforts.  Fortunately, TDOT Geotechnical employees on site were able to alert personnel to the possibility of another slide and all people were evacuated before the second slide occurred at 1:00 p.m.

TDOT maintenance forces are on the scene removing as many rocks and materials as possible with their equipment. Meanwhile, the department is working to secure an emergency contact to remove the larger rocks. TDOT Geotechnical personnel are also on site to determine the stability of slopes in the area and the potential for further slides. The roadway will remain closed until further notice, but could be closed for more than a week.

Motorists traveling to the area from Chattanooga or Cleveland should take I-75 North to Exit 60 (SR-68, Sweetwater) and follow SR-68 South through McMinn County and into Ducktown in Polk County. Those traveling from North Carolina are advised to take US-74 to SR-68 North at Ducktown through McMinn County then onto I-75 at Sweetwater in Monroe County."
